The Vulture Mine near Wickenburg, AZ opened in 1863 when Henry Wickenburg stumbled upon the mother lode - a massive deposit of gold. The town of Vulture was at one time the third largest town in the territory. It's estimated that the mine produced between 200 and 300 million dollars in gold at the prices of the day. The stone used in construction of the assay office is reported to contain about $600,000 in gold. The assay office was the heart of the mining operation, and is still the best preserved of the buildings at Vulture. The town was populated by miners and their families. The mine shut down in 1942. Ruins of the mine and the adjacent Vulture City can be viewed on a self-guided tour. Don't miss the Hanging Tree. People do crazy things for gold.
